Excursion. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, around three-thirty on 17 October 1965. The "Horseshoe Curve Excursion" ~ sponsored by the Lancaster Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society ~ has stopped at the Curve for excursion passengers to visit PRR K-4S "Pacific" #1361. Meanwhile, a mixed-cargo freight train rounds the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8612 ~ an AS-24M built by the American Locomotive Company in August of 1956 and rated at 2,400 horsepower ~ is serving as one of its tail-end pushers. Partially visible at the far left is one of the Excursion's passenger cars; visible at the far right is venerable Milepost 242. (#8 of 10) |
